Frequently Asked Questions

Occupational Therapy at Lone Star Children’s Therapy

Therapy typically begins with a formal evaluation using standardized testing to determine the level a child is performing. Standardized testing will address gross and fine motor skills, visual-motor skills, handwriting, and the ability to process and integrate sensory information. After being evaluated, the therapist may communicate with parents, educators, and fellow therapists to determine age-appropriate therapy goals for the child. Occupational Therapy may be performed in an individual or group setting.

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is concerned with the child’s ability to participate in desired daily life activities or “occupations.” Occupational therapists use their unique expertise to help children prepare for and perform important learning and developmental activities. Occupational therapists support the achievement of developmental and learning outcomes for children with and without disabilities by facilitating social skills development, motor development, emergent literacy, and the development of adaptive and self-care skills.

In addition to dealing with an individual’s physical well-being, OT practitioners address psychological, social, and environmental factors that may hinder an individual’s functioning in different ways. This unique approach makes occupational therapy a vital part of health care for some kids.

variety of conditions that may impact a child's physical development and
function, helping them reach their full potential. PTs work on neuromuscular

What is Sensory Integration?

Sensory integration is a physiological process addressed by Occupational Therapists to assist children in responding appropriately to the demands of the environment. The use of sensory techniques can positively affect behavior, motor skills, performance on a task, and improve peer interactions. At Lone Star Children’s Therapy, Inc., we carry out sensory techniques and integrate them into a classroom and home setting. Can I use insurance to pay for OT services?

If you plan to submit occupational therapy (OT) services for insurance reimbursement, we recommend obtaining a doctor’s prescription for “OT Evaluation and Treatment” to facilitate insurance coverage.  The doctor can also provide a diagnosis code to deem services medically necessary.   We also recommend you call your HSA or Insurance provider to see if they will reimburse you for out-of-network occupational therapy services, and if they need anything specific on the invoice(or super bill).  Billing is sent monthly.

Is Occupational Therapy Covered by Insurance?

Yes! OT is often covered by insurance.  This is always dependent on your insurance provider and plan.  It is recommended that parents get a diagnosis code from the doctor so this can be placed on the superbill (or bill) provided monthly. Parents will pay for services out of pocket but then they can submit the superbill to the insurance company.

What is Therapeutic Music Listening?

Therapeutic music listening therapy is a structured approach that uses music to address specific therapeutic goals. It involves listening to specially selected and modified music, often as part of a sensory integration or rehabilitation program, to improve listening skills, sensory processing, and overall well-being. The program used at Lone Star Children’s Therapy, Inc. requires a certification number to order.  Music listening may be used to treat:

  • Auditory Processing
  • Sensory Processing
  • Attention
  • Self Regulation
  • Motor Skill Development

LONE STAR Testimonials

What our clients say

Don't walk, RUN to Marnie!

Don’t walk, RUN to Marnie! We have used her previously with our oldest child for fine motor difficulties and sensory challenges, and now with our youngest for gross and fine motor delays. We wouldn’t trust anyone else! We had tried someone before her when going through figuring out what my oldest needed. They were absolutely terrible. Marnie was a lifesaver! She effectively balances multiple approaches to OT, tailored to your child’s needs. She integrates emotion regulation tips and tricks for the older kids, as appropriate. One of my favorite phrases that she taught my son when he was struggling with cognitive rigidity was to encourage him to be a “flexible noodle”. We still use this with him to this day! She is extremely thorough in her work and her documentation. You get photos/videos and a progress note directly to you within 24 hours of each session. She is always available for questions between sessions. She coordinates and collaborates with your child’s teachers and other providers, as necessary. If she has space, you are lucky to be able to work with her!

Rachel, Mother of 3

We had no idea how fortunate we would be to find ourselves in Marnie‘s experienced, capable, and loving hands.

When we were looking for occupational therapy for our four-year-old, we had no idea how fortunate we would be to find ourselves in Marnie‘s experienced, capable, and loving hands. Her creative, energetic, and engaging therapeutic approach has transformed our son into a confident nursery schooler eager to show off somersaults, climbing, and vital fine motor skills he will take to pre-K. Marnie has also cultivated in him a genuine excitement about going to school every day. Our son refers to his sessions as time he gets to spend in “Miss Marnie‘s playroom”—and he is proud to tell us all about their work together. Marnie is an exceedingly gifted practitioner who has made a great impact on our son’s life with patience, warmth,  humor, and professional expertise. We highly recommend!

OT with Lone Star Children's Therapy has made a huge difference...

“When our son first started occupational therapy at the age of 2, we weren’t sure what to expect as parents. From the very beginning, Marnie made us feel supported, heard and hopeful. She took the time to understand our son’s unique needs and personality and created a plan for him that was both structured and playful. The OT sessions have been so helpful for him and have also given us strategies and tools to try at home. Over the last 18 months, we’ve seen such incredible growth! Our son is stronger, more connected to his body, and more comfortable trying new things. We’re so grateful to Marnie for her patience, creativity and compassion that she brings to each session. OT with Marnie has made a huge difference in our son’s life and in our family’s journey, and we truly can’t thank her enough!”
